The Klean Group

The Klean Group

Klean Biochar is one business within Klean Industries Inc., a group that designs, engineers, builds and operates resource recovery facilities.

Biochar is rarely a standalone decision. The same project usually touches waste handling, thermal conversion, gas cleaning, power generation, water treatment and carbon accounting. The group structure exists so a client can resolve all of that with one counterparty instead of assembling five vendors who each own a fragment of the plant and none of the result.

Engineering first

Klean Industries is an engineering organisation before it is anything else. Projects run through feasibility studies, design and engineering, and turn-key delivery, which means the performance promised at the proposal stage is made by the same group accountable for it at commissioning. The portfolio spans waste-to-energy and resource recovery facilities built around thermal conversion technology.

Where biochar fits

Within that portfolio, biochar is the carbon-positive end of pyrolysis. Biomass pyrolysis in an indirectly heated rotary kiln yields biochar, syngas and bio-oil; the group's energy experience handles the gas and liquid streams, while Klean Biochar handles the solid carbon, its soil and industrial applications, and its carbon removal value. The 1 MW plant in Japan, operating since 2012 with Chubu Electric Power, Seiko Epson and the Toyama Research Institute, is the clearest expression of that integration: roughly 1,000 tonnes of biochar a year, base-load power for about 1,000 homes, and over 6,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent offset annually.

Scale to suit the feedstock

Group capability covers fixed industrial facilities and mobile conversion alike — a 40 tonne-per-day mobile biomass pyrolysis retort, MORPPS, has started operations in Vancouver for dispersed feedstock situations where trucking biomass destroys the economics.

One group, one accountability line

Feedstock study, process selection, plant design, construction, commissioning and product offtake sit inside the same organisation. Detailed technology descriptions, reference lists and project economics are provided under NDA.
